What to expect

A Groodle can become physically large before behaving like an adult. Excitable greetings, distraction and uneven recall may continue while they mature. Practise manageable skills on quiet routes and reward four paws on the ground. Their size does not make them ready for adult training demands.

Everyday care for your Groodle

Recheck harness fit and sleeping space as they grow. Teach calm handling of a paw at a time, with breaks. A cooperative grooming routine matters for a dog who may become too large to comfortably lift or hold.

Food, exercise & rest

Ask your vet whether they need a growth diet formulated for an expected large adult size. Avoid feeding to maximise size. Let exercise develop gradually; avoid forced distance running, cycling alongside or repetitive high-impact play while growing.

What to watch for

A persistent limp, reluctance to rise or difficulty with stairs needs assessment rather than being labelled growing pains. Hip problems can begin during development. Mention Golden Retriever and Poodle family history, and bring any parent screening records.

Questions for your vet

Review growth, body condition, movement and the timing of adult food and desexing. Check the vaccine record and prevention appropriate to local outings. Ask when sustained running would be suitable for this individual.

Use the Australian health calendar to plan prevention. Vaccine timing depends on the product, history and local risk. For tick-risk areas, ask about effective prevention and daily tick checks.

A small thing to try together

Reward a relaxed pause before opening the door. Practise when nothing exciting is happening, then use the same routine before a short outing.
